Frequently Asked Questions
What does growing degree day mean?
Growing degree days (GDD) measure heat accumulation above a base temperature, used to predict crop development stages from emergence through maturity. The Planner accumulates GDD from the date you set, using NWS observed and forecast temperatures.
How is frost risk estimated?
Frost risk uses the NWS minimum temperature forecast plus historical frost dates for your area. The Planner flags nights forecast to drop near or below freezing so you can plan covers, irrigation, or harvest decisions.
Why are moon phases included?
Some growers plant by lunar cycles. Whether or not you follow that approach, moon phase data is also useful for predicting tide ranges, night work visibility, and wildlife activity patterns.
How accurate are the 14-day forecasts?
The first 7 days tend to be reasonably accurate; days 8 through 14 are general trend signals, not precise predictions. NWS confidence drops with time. Treat the back end of the forecast as guidance, not certainty.
