Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the soil data come from?

Data comes from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service's Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO), the same database that powers the Web Soil Survey. The tool just simplifies the output for fast field-by-field lookup.

How accurate are the soil descriptions?

SSURGO data is mapped at scales useful for general farm planning, typically 1:12,000 to 1:24,000. It is accurate enough to identify dominant soil series and properties but not precise enough to delineate small soil variations within a field.

What does 'available water capacity' mean?

Available water capacity (AWC) is the amount of water a soil can hold that plant roots can actually use, measured in inches of water per inch of soil. Higher AWC soils carry crops longer between rains. The Quicklook shows AWC by soil layer so you can compare ground.

Can I use this for compliance or program enrollment?

For NRCS programs, FSA paperwork, or any official designation, use the official Web Soil Survey or work with your local NRCS office. The Quicklook is a convenience tool, not an official record.

Why are there multiple soils in my field?

Most fields contain more than one soil map unit because soils form along slope, drainage, and parent material gradients. The tool lists each map unit with its percentage of the area you queried.
