See-and-Spray Herbicide Savings: Will Spot Spraying Actually Pay on Your Acres?

Machine-vision spot spraying can cut herbicide use by roughly 40 to 76 percent on the post-emergence pass, with independent trials showing around $15 to $40 per acre in chemical savings. But the payoff is conditional: it depends on your weed pressure, crop chemistry cost, acreage, and how you set sensitivity. Run it wrong and the savings reverse.

What is spot spraying actually buying you?

A machine-vision sprayer puts cameras and a processor on the boom. It looks at the ground in real time, decides which nozzles fire, and sprays weeds instead of blanketing the whole field. On fallow or pre-plant ground it targets any green against bare soil. In a growing crop it has to tell a weed from the crop row, which is the harder job and the one that separates the newer systems from the older ones.

What you are buying is not a yield bump. It is chemical you do not spray. On a post-emergence pass where most of the field is clean, you might treat 20 to 50 percent of the acre and skip the rest. That skipped chemical is the entire economic case. Everything else in this article is about how big that number really is, what it costs to capture, and what happens to the acres you stopped spraying.

How much does spot spraying really save per acre?

Not every savings figure deserves the same trust. Rank them by who measured them.

Independent and university trials first. Iowa State University work with See and Spray reported an average 76 percent product savings across test fields and about $15.70 per acre in economic savings. A three-year University of Arkansas trial led by weed scientist Jason Norsworthy, running from 2022 at the Keiser research center, found a 43 to 59 percent reduction in herbicide use compared with broadcast spraying. Those are the numbers to plan around because the people reporting them had no sprayer to sell.

Vendor averages second, read as best-case. John Deere reported that 2024 season customers averaged 59 percent herbicide savings, then said the 2025 season averaged closer to a 50 percent reduction in non-residual herbicide across about 5 million acres, saving an estimated 31 million gallons of mix. Greeneye Technology reported its 2024 customers averaged an 87 percent reduction in non-residual herbicide use. These are real and large, but they are self-reported and they represent averages, which means half the fields did worse.

Notice the gap between the 2024 and 2025 Deere figures. The drop from 59 to about 50 percent was not a worse machine. It was a wetter, weedier season. More weeds means more nozzles firing means less skipped chemical. This is the first uncomfortable truth of the technology: it saves the most on clean fields, which are the fields that needed the least chemical in the first place. The dirty, high-pressure fields where you most want relief are exactly where it saves the least.

What are the three ways you pay for it?

The savings only matter net of what the system costs, and vendors have split into two very different business models. Get this part wrong and the break-even math changes completely.

On the upfront side, a Greeneye retrofit for a 120-foot boom with a dual-tank setup has been reported around $239,000, which includes the system, a new aluminum boom, the install, and warranty, with no annual subscription or per-acre fee. Greeneye reported per-acre savings in the range of $25 to $35 in 2024. Case IH's SenseApply likewise carries no subscription or per-acre fee, and the company estimates payback in one to two years depending on acres and number of applications. Treat that payback estimate as the vendor's, not gospel.

On the pay-as-you-save side, John Deere splits into three tiers. Select is an open license with no per-acre fee, aimed at green-on-brown fallow and pre-plant work. Premium is the retrofit for ExactApply machines from model years 2018 through 2026, and it charges $1 per acre on fallow ground and $5 per acre in-crop, billed only when the system detects a weed and skips a spray. Ultimate is factory-installed on new sprayers only and is not a retrofit. The Premium model is elegant on paper because you only pay a cut of what you save. It is also where high weed pressure quietly works against you: a field so dirty it fires constantly saves little chemical and racks up in-crop fees. The economics invert precisely where you hoped to save most.

A third category is worth watching. BASF and Bosch's One Smart Spray is built to be multi-manufacturer, meaning it aims to work across sprayer brands rather than lock you to one. Public per-acre pricing has not been detailed, so do not budget against a number that does not exist yet.

Will spot spraying pay for itself on your operation?

Skip the vendor calculators and run it yourself on the back of an envelope. The math is not complicated.

Start with what you spend now on the pass you would target. That is acres times the number of post-emergence passes times your chemical cost per acre. A grower running expensive post-emergence chemistry on a lot of acres has a big number here, and a big number is what pays for this technology. A grower spraying cheap generics on modest acres has a small number, and small numbers do not clear a $200,000-plus retrofit.

Now discount that spend by the savings you can realistically expect. Use the independent range, not the vendor peak: figure 40 to 60 percent off the targeted pass if you run the machine properly. On a subscription model, subtract the per-acre fees for the acres it actually sprays. On an upfront model, subtract the hardware cost spread over the years you will keep the sprayer.

A 2026 study in the journal Agrosystems, Geosciences and Environment by Avent and colleagues put break-even in concrete terms: producers would need to be spending roughly $27 per hectare on targeted herbicide to break even on the Premium fee model, and about $39 per hectare for Ultimate. Converted to acres that lands near $11 and $16, though confirm the exact figures against the study before you bet a purchase on them. The point of the number is the direction it points: the more you already spend per acre on the targeted pass, the faster the machine pays back. If your per-acre chemical spend on that pass is low, the honest answer is to wait.

What is the mistake that erases the savings?

This is the section no vendor brochure will write, and it is the reason a machine that saves chemical can still cost you money.

The Arkansas trial found something the savings headlines leave out. At high sensitivity, where the machine sprays aggressively at anything that might be a weed, weed control was comparable to broadcast. But at low sensitivity, tuned to chase maximum chemical savings, the researchers saw a modest yield bump of about 4 bushels per acre from less crop injury, and alongside it, Palmer amaranth populations climbing roughly 280 percent per year. Every weed the machine let slip went to seed. Norsworthy's team estimated that improper use accelerating resistance could cost Arkansas growers upward of $60 million a year.

That is the trap. Spraying less by letting escapes go is not savings, it is a loan against next season at a brutal interest rate. Resistant pigweed does not forgive a missed pass.

Two disciplines keep you out of it. First, keep residual herbicides broadcast. The Arkansas work found residuals were more effective applied across the whole field, and the biggest safe savings come from targeting the post-emergence pass, not your pre or residual program. Target the wrong pass and you throw away the whole-field protection that keeps weeds from ever emerging. Second, run sensitivity high enough to actually control weeds, then scout your escapes and clean them up. The goal is to spray less chemical on the same clean field, not to accept a dirtier field in exchange for a smaller invoice.

Who should buy now, and who should wait?

The honest segmentation looks like this. The strong case is a grower with big acres, expensive post-emergence chemistry, and real resistant-weed pressure that demands a clean field anyway. That operation is spending enough per acre that even a large retrofit pays back in a couple of seasons, and the discipline of high-sensitivity spraying fits how they already manage resistance.

The wait case is a smaller operation, cheap chemistry, or fields that are already clean. If your per-acre spend on the targeted pass is low, there is not enough chemical to save to cover the hardware, and a subscription tier only makes sense if you can trial it without a long commitment. There is no shame in letting the technology mature another season. Independent commentary on the 2026 market keeps returning to the same theme: the tech is developing faster than farmers are adopting it, and cost, subscription fatigue, and trust are the brakes, not capability.

A short buying checklist before you commit

Precision spraying is one of the few input technologies where the savings are real and measured, not marketing. The catch is that the same knob that saves you chemical can cost you your weed control if you turn it too far. Run it for a clean field first and a smaller invoice second, and the money follows.
